BCMMB staff are working closely with Transporters to manage milk pickup and delivery through recent extremely challenging weather events. The situation continues to evolve but there are currently several farms that are inaccessible due to persisting flood conditions. Pickup and delivery delays are to be expected due to closure of multiple major highways. The area most impacted by flooding is the Sumas Prairie region and resulting closure of Highway 1. The Lower Mainland is currently accessible from the east via other routes, but heavy traffic on these routes is leading to significant delays that will compound over time until all roads are reopened.
All producers in the BC Interior Milk pickup to proceed as normal with anticipated delays.
Producers in Prince George/Bulkley Valley/Smithers Milk pickup to proceed as normal with anticipated delays.
Producers in the Creston/Kootenays will have continued pickup with milk moving east rather than into the Lower Mainland.
Producers in Lower Mainland are mostly accessible by milk trucks. Route runners from our haulers continue to assess the evolving situation and the BCMMB or Transporter staff will advise impacted producers on the status of their pickup, and potential alternatives. Please be aware that haulers must respect local road closures.
Processors in the Lower Mainland are currently receiving full volume deliveries but can expect delays potentially increasing the longer Highway 1 remains closed.
Disposal and reporting: The BCMMB and Transporter staff are working diligently to minimize the need for milk disposal. In the event you are asked to dispose, please do so responsibly. Before disposing, record your dipstick measurement and send in an email,
